Peripheral angioplasty is a medical procedure used to treat narrowed or blocked arteries outside the heart, typically in the legs or arms. During the procedure, a catheter with a deflated balloon is inserted into the affected artery. The balloon is then inflated to widen the artery and improve blood flow. In some cases, a stent may be inserted to help keep the artery open. Peripheral angioplasty is often performed to alleviate symptoms such as leg pain or to prevent more serious complications like gangrene. It is a less invasive alternative to surgical bypass procedures for peripheral artery disease.
