Bronchial / uterine embolisation

Bronchial or uterine embolization is a minimally invasive medical procedure that plays a crucial role in the management of specific conditions affecting the bronchial arteries or the uterus. In bronchial embolization, tiny particles or coils are introduced into the blood vessels supplying the bronchi, often to address conditions such as severe and persistent hemoptysis (coughing up blood). This procedure helps to block abnormal blood vessels, reducing or stopping the bleeding and promoting lung function. On the other hand, uterine embolization involves the introduction of embolic agents into the blood vessels supplying the uterus, serving as a non-surgical alternative to treat conditions such as uterine fibroids. By blocking the blood flow to the fibroids, uterine embolization can shrink them, providing relief from symptoms like pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Both bronchial and uterine embolization exemplify the advancements in interventional radiology, offering patients effective and less invasive alternatives to traditional surgical approaches.
